Wine & Girl Scout Cookies Pairing

It has been over 100 years since the first-ever sale of cookies by Girl Scouts. Every so often, a new cookie is introduced. This year it is the Adverturefuls. As the Girl Scouts say, this latest addition to the lineup presents “a big taste of deliciousness and adventure.” It is an indulgent brownie-inspired cookie with caramel-flavored crème and a hint of sea salt.

Through the years, we have suffered through a lot of cookies to determine which wines might be the best pairing with Girl Scout cookies. Here are our top three favorites and why the pairing is perfect.

Adverturefuls – A Rhone Red Blend like LDV Winery’s 2016 R.E.D. would be delightful. This wine takes people on an adventure of tastes like this cookie. It is full-bodied with 61% Grenache and 39% Petite Sirah. Aged in American oak barrels this wine has a kiss of toasty new oak will play well with this new cookie.

S’mores – These tasty treats were basically invented by the Girl Scouts back in 1927. Dreaming about these cookies, you need something that might go well with a campfire. The perfect wine for a campfire is a Shiraz because of its typical blue and black fruit flavors, a bit of smokiness, and hints of brown sugar. LDV Winery’s perfect pairing would be the 2014 Sky Island Petite Sirah with its beautifully balanced fruit flavors. The wine was aged 35 months in neutral oak barrels to let the fruit shine. This wine is always perfect with anything grilled including s’mores.

Thin Mints – This is the number one selling Girl Scout cookie and it pairs perfectly with a Cabernet Franc. These wines typically have some mint notes to them and are full of juicy raspberry with hints of herbal aromas. This light, crispy, minty, chocolate cookie pairs with LDV Winery’s bold, complex (Double Gold Medal winner) 2015 “The Signature” Petite Sirah. This ultra, full-bodied wine with smokey, spicy dark fruit flavors pairs well with this rich chocolate cookie.
